France

France is the largest country of Western Europe and has long been a centre of European civilisation. It has been the cultural hub of Europe for centuries and Paris, its capital is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. France has produced some of the most acclaimed artists of world-renowned masterpieces. French fashion and cooking are likewise recognised as one of the world’s best.

This country which has attracted millions of tourists due to its scenic splendours is situated on the western edge of the European continent. Most regions of France lie within the temperate marine climate area with the exception of the Mediterranean coast. Travel to France during the mid-summer, specifically the month of August is not advisable as it can get very hot, thus most of the locals are on holidays.

Paris will always be a worthwhile stop with a visit to the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre (one of Europe’s finest galleries) and the Moulin Rouge. If you want to deviate from the usual tourist destinations, Vezelay is a good place to visit. It is a tiny walled town surrounded by vineyards and farmlands. France has many historic landmarks and natural attractions to offer.

The French rail network is quite extensive and highly efficient. It has connections not only within the country but also to major cities in other European countries. You can choose to purchase a rail pass which are of good value when you intend to do a lot of travelling in the country. Bus travel is inconvenient and is not advised except for those not covered by rail network. However, it is quite suitable for local travel within a town.

Accommodation comes in the form of hotels, youth hostels and bed and breakfasts. All EU nationals can live and find employment in France with the necessary residence permit whilst non-EU nationals must have pre-arranged employment and visas before entering the country. There are vast opportunities for voluntary work in the maintenance of historical and architectural sites.
