Italy

Italy is a country in Southern Europe, separated from the rest of the continent by the Alps. The Apennine mountain chain which runs the entire length of Italy created a number of naturally separate regions of different topography as well as historical and cultural development. The loyalty of the Italian people to their particular region has greatly influenced their way of life. It is known as the birthplace of the Roman Empire and the home of the Catholic Church.

The country has a climate that is diverse as its regions. Most of Italy has a dry, typically Mediterranean climate with hot, sunny summers. The Alpine winters, on the other hand are long and cold and there is perpetual snow on the upper mountain slopes. Rainfall is abundant throughout the year in the Alps and along the Northwestern Coast.

One of the major attractions of Italy is Rome — its capital and which surrounds the Vatican City. It is particularly proud of the huge number of Roman structures, the most famous of which is the Coliseum. There is also the ancient Roman town of Pompeii situated near Naples. This town used to be a wealthy Roman country retreat that was buried under volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted. It has since been excavated and restored and made available to be seen by visitors.

The Italian train system is extensive and cheap but it can be incredibly slow. You may have to pay a surcharge to make a reservation on Italian trains as some services are extremely busy. Local train passes are of good value if you intend to base your trip solely in Italy. The bus system is composed of numerous competing private services. It is usually cheaper and faster than the rail network.

Accommodation suitable for any budget is available throughout the country. There are luxurious hotels, economy hotels and hostels. Health service is good and there are no recommended vaccinations required for visiting Italy.

Employment comes in the form of teaching the English language, au pairing and camp site jobs. Holiday resorts offer the most opportunity in finding casual work for interested travellers. Coastal resorts during summer and ski resorts during winter are good places to start searching. Knowledge of a foreign language is advantageous as these establishments mainly cater to tourists of varied nationalities.
