Spain

Spain is a country in Southwestern Europe which occupies about 85 percent of the Iberian Peninsula, while Portugal, which lies west of Spain and occupies the remainder of the peninsula. Portugal’s colonial empire was gained largely through the exploration of seafarers. It brought great prestige to the country but the age of discovery exhausted the resources of the empire. The period of dependence on Spain contributed to its decline.

There are three distinct climate patterns in Spain. The plain is extremely dry. The Northern and Northwestern section enjoy a temperate climate with adequate rainfall throughout the year, while the Southern Mediterranean coast is dry with extremely hot summers and mild and damp winters. Portugal is just a short drive away from Galicia which is the northwest corner of the country.

The climate of Northern Portugal is mild and damp due to its proximity to the ocean. The south experiences much warmer summers. The vegetation patterns of the country reflect its climate. There are forests of beech and pines on the northern part while vegetation becomes sparser going south.

Tourist attractions in Spain include the Andalusia, the most historic part of the country. It contains the cities of Granada and Seville. There are also theme parks, beaches and the local tapas bars. Portugal is known for its seaside resorts and the religious shrine of Fatima.

Travelling around in these areas is quite easy with its well maintained rail network. Some travel passes allow unlimited train travel but a more universal travel pass may be needed for trips to other European countries. Buses are better for short distances.

There is a wide choice of traditional sky rise hotels, pensions and hostels for one’s accommodation. The standard of healthcare is generally good particularly in tourist hot spots. Opportunities for employment include au pairing, resort and camp site jobs. Restaurants pay workers for a touting job which is handling out leaflets, putting up posters and chatting with passers-by to attract tourists to their establishments. Volunteer work concerning environmental management and working with people with disabilities are available.
