USA

The United States of America is a federal republic covering the width of the North American continent between Canada and Mexico and also includes Alaska and the Hawaiian Islands. It is one of the largest nations in the world in terms of area and population. This is a usual backpacker destination probably due to familiarity with its culture.

There are regional variations in climate but as a general guide, climates tend to get warmer going south and colder going north. The tourist attractions are countless and the number of recreational activities is endless. Travel is easy with the efficiency of its train and bus service networks. Domestic flights are regular and car rental is widely available.

You need not worry about accommodations in the USA, budget or otherwise. Even the cheapest motels deliver a fairly good standard of service. Health care need not also be a cause of worry as the country has an excellent health care system, but be sure to have comprehensive travel insurance.

Employment opportunities are many but it should be noted that casual work without the necessary working permits is illegal. This can lead to deportation and possible refusal of entry upon return. The recommended way is to go through an agency or organisation. Visas of this nature may involve a long application process.

The British Universities of North America Club (BUNAC) and Camp America are probably in the best position to help gap year students. There are employment opportunities in summer camps, teaching, cooking and cleaning among others. These organisations provide for travel expenses, food, accommodation and pocket money. However, there is a fee to be paid for the cost of registration, insurance and visa fees. You are guaranteed to earn much more than what you have paid.

Competition for job placement is quite stiff especially for positions that pay higher. Although these organisations assist in arranging visas, there is no guarantee that they can obtain it without requiring any participation from the applicant. Jobs of these natures are quite serious and require responsible action but it is definitely a great way to see the USA.
