FAQ's

Does backpacking really involve carrying your pack all the time?
Backpacking is a more spartan style of travelling. This requires carrying your backpack most of the time as it contains everything essential to you as a traveller.

Are there any special concerns for taking my own vehicle in a backpacking trip?
You should take with you your vehicle’s registration document, place a sign showing the country of origin (when appropriate), and never forget to obtain the proper insurance both for yourself and the vehicle.

What is the best kind of shoe to wear?
The best shoe to wear in terms of comfort, practicality and durability is probably walking shoes or hiking boots. Besides being kinder to your feet, it can be worn even in places with dress codes.

How do I keep in touch with home while on a trip?
Bringing your own cell phone, assuming they can actually be used in your place of destination could be very costly. You could try renting one or buy pre-paid SIM cards.

How do I determine my itinerary?
You should list down the places you simply must visit and be realistic about it and consider your available funds and time.

How do I get the proper identification regarding the place I intend to visit?
You can request information on-line from tourist board organisations of the country you wish to visit.

Are there any travel discounts that can be availed of by students?
There are discounts and special arrangements available to students, youth (under 26 years) and teachers, which are recognised in over 100 countries by being members of related organisations. Check for availability in your locality.

Is it safe to travel?
Travelling is not exempt from risks but generally, it is safe as long as you exercise caution and be aware of travel advisories of potential dangerous places.

Which is better, travelling solo or with a companion?
Each has its own advantage and disadvantage but the strongest point on going solo is you can decide for yourself where and when you want to go with whoever you wish. Travelling with a companion is preferred if you intend to venture into the wilderness specially the first time.

Is it wise to choose an accommodation through hostels’ representatives at train stations?
This is quite convenient if you do not have prior reservation especially if it’s the peak season but try negotiating to lower the price and take a look at the place if it is acceptable to you.

Is there any chance that anyone would not enjoy hiking?
People who do not enjoy the outdoors will definitely not enjoy hiking but for those who are open to adventure, going unprepared for outdoor conditions and being over prepared by carrying too much are sure-fire fun spoilers.

What is the best way to organise my hiking gear?
The best way to organise is to categorise your things by function and pack related gears together so you can easily remember the location of each item i.e. food category, clothes, shelter.

Why do hostels have lock-outs?
Hostelling encourages travellers to go out and explore their surroundings rather than stay in the room. They usually have lock-out times to clean the rooms and restrooms.

What is the payment term for online hostel booking?
You shall be charged a booking fee and a deposit which is usually 10% and are non refundable. The balance is due upon your arrival.

Where can I leave my backpack if I need to do some exploring?
Most major train stations and hostels provide lockers and luggage storage. Just remember to bring important documents with you in your day pack.
