Athens had an impressive tag — the Glory that was Athens. Today,
the city is still glorious, especially in terms of architecture, culture,
and history. As the gateway to the Greek isles, Athens is becoming popular
with tourists, and while the city is not as colourful as other European
cities, its tangible link with its history gives it solid credibility
and more than a bit of awe.
Getting Around
If you want to go look at the city’s top attractions, never fear
— most of them are within walking distance of one another. The Metro
system in Athens is efficient, with three lines in operation. The bus
system, however, serves all parts of the city and is therefore more conducive
to exploring and traveling.
Things to See
Athens offers a lot to the culturally and historically minded; after all,
this city is the birthplace of democracy! Add to that the numerous temples
and shrines made to the gods and it’s enough to send a history lover
over the roof. That’s not to say only they will enjoy the sites,
as gazing upon the overwhelming structure of the Acropolis and the Parthenon
will render almost everyone quiet. Stroll down the Theatre of Dionysus
and pay homage to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. For more touristy areas,
the Plaka is just the place in the city to relax after a day’s journey
of sightseeing.
Things to Do
Enjoying the nightlife in Athens means playing to a different tune –
their nightlife is at its best during the winter months instead of the
summer, as everyone else heads out to the beaches. Clubs don’t open
until 11 pm and don’t close for hours, so make sure you’re
up to partying. If that isn’t really your thing, check out live
music at Rodhon, the best place to hear rock and soul.
Where to Stay
Athens is slowly growing popular in the backpacker community. Athens Backpackers
has been voted one of Greece’s top hostels and is located just two
minutes away from the Acropolis. Dormitories start from $21.
