Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a charming city that mixes the best of the modern and the ancient world. It is quite unique in the sense that a castle overlooks the city itself, giving the impression of laying claim over everything that happens underneath. It is a popular destination for tourists and backpackers, and due to their patronage, the city is relatively cheap compared with other European cities.

Getting Around

Edinburgh makes it relatively easy for the backpacker to travel on foot. The city is divided into two: the New Town and the Old Town; both offer interesting, unique sights.

Travelling by bus in the city is cheap, and the services are pretty regular too. Tickets can be bought on the bus itself, but they will give you no change if your money isn’t exact fare. Edinburgh also offers train services but buses are cheaper.

Things to See

Because of its size, the best way to view Edinburgh is on foot. Take a hike up Arthur’s Peak (over 800 feet high) or stroll through the Royal Botanic Garden if hiking is too much of a task. Visit Edinburgh Castle and have a grand time touring the Scottish Whisky Centre, tasting and sampling along the way!

Things to Do

Tag along through ghost tours, which are fast becoming popular through the city. These specialised tours also allow you access to parts of buildings that aren’t for public viewing.

Because going out in Edinburgh is cheap, you’ll meet everyone having a great time drinking at bars and clubs. Popular with tourists is the Old Town area, specifically the Royal Mile street, which is home to a host of bars and nightspots.

Where to Stay

There are a lot of hostels and budget inns in Edinburgh; the only problem you’ll have is choosing. Budget Backpackers is a four-star youth hostel that is conveniently located in the heart of the Old Town. A night’s stay would be under $20.

TIP

The Royal Mile street is filled with museums that have no entrance fees.
