Hong Kong

One thing comes in to mind when the words Hong Kong are mentioned — shopping! Virtually all visitors spend more than 50 percent of their money on shopping. It’s also been observed that luxury liners dock in Hong Kong longer than in other places so as to give more shopping time to travellers.

Getting Around

Hong Kong has one of the most efficient and extensive public transportation in the world. That and it’s very cheap! The fastest mode would be the Mass Transit Railway (MTR), Hong Kong’s subway system. One better be prepared to battle it out with the human crunch, though. Also popular is the Star Ferry which transports passengers from Hong Kong to Kowloon. It’s not more than a seven-minute ride but is delightful nevertheless.

Things to See

Tourists primarily consider Hong Kong as one big shopping bazaar. Recently, though, a big and grand attraction has been added — the Hong Kong Disneyland. Now, aside from all the shopping extravaganza, people have another reason to visit Hong Kong.

Things to Do

Tired of carrying those shopping bags? Then try this unconventional pursuit — the Tai Chi or shadow boxing. It is an ancient Chinese regimen designed to balance body and soul and nurture self-discipline. Lessons are often conducted every morning in downtown parks and open public spaces. Tourists can join the complimentary one-hour lessons.

Where to Stay

Hotels are scattered everywhere in this compact city. Every location is convenient because of the accessibility of public transportation everywhere. One must remember to book in advance, though, because of the year-round influx of tourists in Hong Kong.

TIP

Hopping from one place to another would entail several bus, ferry, tram, and/or subway transfers which requires a new ticket every time. When staying in the city for a few days, it is advisable to purchase the Octopus. It is an electronic smart card that allows passengers to transfer from one mode of transportation to another without the hassle of having to buy a ticket every time.
