Melbourne’s population of three million is colourfully characterised
by diverse cultures. Australia's second largest city, it is home to Lebanese,
Chinese, Italian, Vietnamese, and Greeks. Melbourne is known as one of
the most livable cities in the world.
Getting Around
In a city with confusing roads, aggressive drivers, strange rules about
turning left or right in major thoroughfares, and expensive parking, public
transportation is the way to go! Trams, trains, and buses are the most
practical means of getting from one place to another. Designated stops
are located strategically around the city, which saves the tourists the
hassle of finding their destination.
Things to See
Melbourne’s multicultural orientation is reflected through the shopping,
fashion, nightlife, and café scenes. It is a favorite venue for
international concerts, major plays, and exhibitions. Aside from appreciating
the city’s old world architecture, one may take a side trip and
visit the Melbourne Zoo and Royal Botanical Gardens. And if your trip
falls exactly into the season, don’t miss the Melbourne Cup and
the Australian Tennis Open, which are both major sporting events.
Things to Do
See Melbourne in a different light and go on a hot air balloon trip. There
are a lot of tours that offer an enjoyable glide over the city and free
champagne and breakfast afterwards.
Where to Stay
Hotels are usually packed during the weekdays due to travelling businessmen.
St. Kilda, the city center, is the best place to stay. Hostels are scattered
everywhere and it is right where the action is. Suburbs, on the other
hand, also offer good street life, restaurants and pubs.
