Munich is a high-tech city, home to various technology, which doesn't
quite seem to square with its past of culture and art. Beautiful architecture
is omnipresent here, especially the old churches. Although World War II
wrought havoc on the city, today it has fully recovered and is full of
surprises for travellers young and old.
Getting Around
Munich can be toured on foot although it may be a bit of a long tour,
so make sure you bring your comfy shoes or sandals. Almost all the beautiful
sights can be walked from Marienplatz. If you're disinclined to walk the
whole way, though, the city offers both the tram and the underground/overground
trains (U-bahn and S-bahn). If you go by tram, the travel process is slower
but you'll be able to see a lot more.
Things to See
Marienplatz is easily the center and focus of Munich, the place where
all the gorgeous and breathtaking architecture is located. Take a look
at Gothic churches, gawk at the onion-domed sphere of the Frauenkirche.
Because of its cultural history, the city also has fine museums, considered
some of the best in Europe. Tour ancient castles such as the Schloss Nymphenburg,
which also has beautiful botanical gardens.
Things to Do
Munich is famous for its beer halls; even better, the beer here is considered
cheaper than in other places in Europe. If you want to keep partying,
hop on over to the neon-lit areas of the Kunstpark OST and choose from
the nightclubs there.
Where to Stay
Munich has plenty of hostels to offer the tourist and the backpacker.
Try out in particular the Wombats City Hostel, voted as one of the world's
best hostels. It is known for its cleanliness, its charming style, and
its friendly staff. It is not exactly cheap, but the price is worth it.
Even better — the hostel is just 10 minutes away from Oktoberfest.
