Salzburg

Reminiscent of Old Europe, Salzburg is filled with beautiful churches and squares. It speaks a lot for its nest country Austria, with its Baroque architecture, subalpine scenery and a musical heritage largely provided by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the city’s most famous son. The whole place has a fascination with Mozart, evident in every box of their chocolate specialty, Mozartkugel. The Sound of Music is also a Salzburg-based musical. Before being part of Austria in 1816, it was an independent city-state ruled by a sequence of powerful prince-archbishops.

Getting Around

Salzburg is easy to explore so getting around the city is virtually hassle-free. The local bus, rail network and tourist cabs are readily available. It is best that tourists and transport providers first agree on a service fee because the prices tend to be too much for just a short tour.

Things to Do

Music is the main and constant theme of this place. If you happen to be in the city during their world-famous Salzburg festival, it is a must-attend affair. It is a five-week celebration of opera, orchestral music, and theatre that begins in the second half of the year (July). There is no such thing as peak season in Salzburg. The place is buzzing the whole year.

Where to Stay

Salzburg has so many hotels to choose from and all of them are very flexible budget-wise. However, the most popular hotel with tourists include the Goldener Hirsch Hotel, The Sheraton Salzburg Hotel, Hotel Amadeus and many others.

TIP

Though active the whole year round, spring and summer are still the best times to visit the place. The whole place takes on a different color and these two seasons also draw the biggest crowd of tourists.
